New SEC Web Site: Investor.gov

From an SEC press release: "The Securities and Exchange Commission today launched its first-ever Web site devoted exclusively to investor education, providing investors with in-depth information and 'top tips' on how to invest wisely, plan for the future, and avoid being scammed.

By visiting www.investor.gov, investors can access information in a user-friendly format that is specifically tailored to their needs. The site includes sections specifically for those just getting started investing, for those saving for a child's education, and for those planning for retirement. It also has a detailed 'Seniors Care Package' section for senior citizens and caretakers."

An important note from the "How do I get information about companies?" section -- visit your library to use reference books and commercial databases. UHD Library has a whole section of its Web site devoted to company information. And while most of the resources are restricted to current UHD students, faculty, and staff, there are also some recommended Web sites.

Changes in Accounting Databases

There have been some recent changes in name, content and/or interfaces in two accounting and tax databases subscribed to by UHD Library.

  • CCH Tax Research Network is now CCH IntelliConnect. The database publisher has created a new interface for CCH state and federal tax information, which they intend to be "intuitive and easy to use." This database includes CCH's well-known news sources about changes in tax law, as well as tax codes at the federal and state level.

  • Accounting & Tax with Standards is now just Accounting & Tax.This is due to the major change in the way accounting standards are now handled. The new Accounting Standards Codification is now the single authoritative source of U. S. GAAP, and it will be made freely available to accounting students and faculty through their department. To better supplement the Accounting & Tax database, the publisher has added 1,700 additional titles including books, reference reports and proceedings.
If you have questions about these databases or other library resources, please feel free to comment on this post or contact us via Ask a Librarian.

Faculty Want More Video? UHD Library Has It

A recent study concluded that "The educational use of video on campus is accelerating rapidly in departments across all disciplines," and that "Faculty, librarians, and administrators expect their use of video in education to grow significantly over the next five years." At the same time, legal barriers are impeding this use.

The UHD Library is aware of these issues, and actively seeks out online sources of streaming audio and video to subscribe to. UHD current faculty, students, and staff now have access to several sources of video in a wide variety of disciplines via Library subscriptions.

  • Films on Demand covers the humanities, sciences, business, health and social sciences.
  • American History in Video has material of interest not only to history, but also sociology, psychology, political science, and more.
  • Music Online has almost 5,000 performance videos.

Such resources generally allow you to make playlists and provide access to specific segments of videos, allowing for more convenient uses in online courses.

Their use in online courses is legal since the Library has subscribed to the databases, as long as the usage is for educational purposes via the type of controlled access provided by Blackboard.

And if you need some help with incorporating these and other Library resources into your online course, contact Dauna Campbell, the Online Instruction and Outreach Librarian. She'll be glad to hear from you!
